Salem, Day 2

00:07 Oct 28 2008
Times Read: 732

We woke up around 8:00 on Saturday, had coffee and bagels from the “Complimentary Breakfast” set up in our room, got ready for the day and we were out by 9:00.

Drove into Salem, found parking quite easily and hit the town. Our first stop was the NPS Maritime History area. I thought that there would be an extensive collection of material since Salem was such a large shipping and whaling port in the 19th century, but I was disappointed. They have a small visitor center, several buildings and a reproduction merchant ship. But, of course, there were separate fees for each thing and long lines. So we just walked around and then went on to the House of the Seven Gables.

As we got to the House of the Seven Gables, we were immediately preceded by 3 full tour busses. This made the line for admission VERY long. As the tours are done by set times, we would have had to wait about 2 hours before being able to go on the tour….So we elected to bypass this as well!

We spent the rest of the morning going through the various shops on Pickering Wharf. We got into Laurie Cabot’s shop again, after a bit of a wait in line where we had some great conversations. I even had a chat with one of Laurie’s students regarding VR. He visits but does not have a profile. I encouraged him to sign up so I hope to see him here! Gina bought a book and a CD of meditations and Laurie Cabot was signing various items, so we did got to sit down with her and have a chat. She seems like an amazing woman!

On our way to find somewhere to have lunch we passed by the memorial for those put to death during the Witch trials of 1692. This is adjacent to a 17th century graveyard. We were appalled by the behavior of people in this area. There were literally hundreds of people trampling through the graveyard, dropping their trash and behaving very inappropriately. In addition, people were using the memorial stones for the various victims as lunch counters, storage areas for their crap, letting their kids climb all over them. It was very sad, but a definite display of how our society views the past as “Entertainment”, rather than something to learn from.

We had a nice lunch at a little Thai restaurant and then headed out for the afternoon. We went through quite a few more shops, got t-shirts for our Daughter and her Boyfriend who watched the animals for us, as the kennel we normally use was closed. Got some gifts for some friends of Gina and some other stuff.

We next went to see a performance titled “Cry Innocent”, which is a theatrical rendition of the Trial of Bridget Bishop. This started in the street with the “Arrest” of the Actress portraying Goodwife Bishop and proceeded through the streets to the old Town Hall, where the “Trial” was recreated. They presented the actual evidence given at the preliminary hearing and the audience served as “jury” and voted whether to indict or release Bridget Bishop. The audience was given an opportunity to ask questions of the various “witnesses”. The stupidity of the average person amazes me. One person asked “Why are you charging her with witchcraft when you say the Devil has hold of her…Why not charge the Devil? He’s a man and you just want to hate women”. To this the actress playing Bridget Bishop yelled at her “What are you talking about? How can you charge the Devil? When’s the last time you have seen the Devil around town?” It is amazing how profoundly dumb people can be.

After the presentation we mad a few last stops and then headed to dinner. We ate at the Legal Seafood in the North Shore mall. It was an awesome meal. We all started with Clam Chowder, Gina and Dave split an order of Steamers as an appetizer and I had Wellfleet Oysters on the half-shell. For entrée Gina and Dave had stuffed lobster and I had Scrod. I also had 2 Sam Adams Octoberfest beers! MMMMM!

Full and tired we headed back to the hotel and tried to stay up for the Phillies game. The rain delay and the full day meant we fell asleep!

Salem Rocks!

03:26 Oct 25 2008
Times Read: 740

Got up at 5:00 AM today. Loaded up teh car and hit the road. Stopped for breakfast a a bagel place in New Jersey. (Diet is on hold for this weekend!).

Rolled into Salem around 12:30. Strolled around and found a nice pub for lunch. Did the Witch House (actually the Home of Jonathan Corwin - One of the Judges in teh Witch Trials of 1692) and the Witch Museum.

Also went through many different shops in town. We went through Laurie Cabot's store and we did see her and exchange brief pleasantries. We will swing back by tomorrow after Gina figures out what she actually wats to buy and where. Hopefully we can engage her in some conversation.

Got out of town about 6:15 and went on an odyssey trying to find out hotel. Google Maps SUCK! and so did the directions we got from a guy in a gas station in Danvers, MA, as well as the hotel clerk. We ended up as far away as Glouster, but eventually found it.

Had a qucik dinner at the local Mall food court. We'll eat much better tomorrow as we found the Legal Seafood we set out for on the way back to the hotel.

Rants

03:15 Oct 22 2008
Times Read: 783

OK I'm going to get to the rants I promissed.

1) The people I work with are idiots! Half the people do not do their friggin jobs and those of us who DO work have to work twice as hard. And why do I have to go to so many damned meetings to talk about what we should be doing?

2) Our new Health Insurance SUCKS. It doens't cover the needles I use for my insulin, the co-pays are more and are requred for more stuff AND we are not covered outside of the U.S.A.. So do they really think I will be willing to travel to Europe on business but be "on my own" if I get sick?

3) Some good news...We found someone to fix Gina's car. The husband of a good friend of her's does welding and can weld some new steel to replace the rusted area.

That's enough for now.

Cars SUCK!

20:42 Oct 12 2008
Times Read: 826

I spent about 4 hours yesterday fixing an exhaust leak on Gina's car. A flange fitting was leaking making the car LOUD. The bolts were so rusted that the bolt heads and nuts rounded off as soon as I applied any torque to them. I bought a Sawz-All to try to cut the bolts, but ended up breaking 3 blades trying. So I bought a gringing cut off wheel for my drill and cut them off that way. Made a new gasket out of some high temp material I had, bought new bolts and when to put it together and it wouldn't line up. I had to remove the entire back half of the exhaust system from the hangers to get it lined up. Finally got it all back together and it purred like a kitten.

Today I went to put new brakes on it so all we would need is a set of tires for the inspection. When I took the first wheel off I noticed that the frame that the front suspension is attached to is rusted through! Can't drive the damned thing now! To the junk yard with it now!

So we now have to go buy ANOTHER car! We can ill afford it at this point but we need to ba able to get around. Too bad there is shit for mass transit in this area.

Like I said...CARS SUCK!

It's about time!

00:31 Oct 08 2008

We were screwed over by the IRS on our 2006 taxes. Apparently My entry of David's SSN on the form couldn't be deciphered by their machines, or by a real live person.

I called them numerous times, giving about 10 different IRS agents the correct SSN, which they claimed to have entered in "The System"..Yet still didn't get the $100.00 or so we were owed for a refund AND they said we owed them an ADDITIONAL $800.00, due to David's dependant deductions being disallowed.

2007 Tax season came and went and it was STILL not straigtened out, so they took $1,000.00 out of our 2007 refuns and applied it to the "Balance due" from 2006. So back in May I called again and FINALLY spoke with someone who knew what the hell was the right thing to do. He said that once the return came in with "missing" information, the only way to fix it was to file a 1040X Ammended return! So I dug out all the records from 2006, filled out the form and mailed it in. There have been several phone calls to them since trying to figure out when this would be resolved.

Well yesterday two letters arrived from the IRS, One for me and one for Gina statimng that they had resolved the issue and that they would be sending us a check for $1080.00. Today the check showed up and it was for $1,150.00!

I hope they didn't srew this up too and are going to blame me again.

I mean, really, I put the damned kids SSN on the tax return EVERY year for the past 14 years..Do you think they could have just looked up the past returns and cut us a break?

The IRS blows!

Yes, yes they do. My friend's father was audited. IRS found out they owed him to the tune of 10,000. And the RAN. They would not tell him how to get his money- so he hired an EA *Enrolled Agent* and filed the paperwork to get his money.

Yet if you don't pay the seize everything? meh.

When the IRS would come in and get some of our officers to go with them on one of their seizure raids it was one of the few times I saw grown men that were normally unafraid not want to go. Those suits with guns were crazy and were ready to shoot anyone that got between them and what they wanted. Now my fellows didn't feel their crap was worth getting in a shoot out over but who don't hate the IRS. lol

WOW 3 days is FOREVER!

00:27 Oct 04 2008
Times Read: 879

I have been absent from VR for the past few days.

This week had me swamped at work so a couple nights I was too busy catching up on "life".

I also spent two straight 10 hour days at work re-doing process control doccumentation, due to some raw material changes at work. By the time I got home I couldn't STAND the sight of a computer!

So...Joli is a Regent now...I saw that.

What the hell else did I miss?

Fill me in people!
